The Ultimate Panama Travel Guide

May 2, 2025

Panama is one of Central America’s best-kept secrets for surfers and adventurers. With two coastlines — the Pacific and the Caribbean — warm tropical water, and a friendly, laid-back vibe, Panama offers year-round waves and plenty to explore both in and out of the water. Whether you're an experienced surfer chasing swell or a beginner looking for the perfect spot to learn, Panama has something for everyone. If you're dreaming about a surf trip in 2025, here’s everything you need to know to make it happen.

How to Get to Panama

Panama City Panama

Getting to Panama is easy. Most international travelers fly into Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, which is well-connected to major cities in North America, South America, and Europe. From there, your next move depends on where you plan to surf.

If you’re headed to Playa Venao, home to our Panama Surf Camp, you can either take a scenic five-hour drive from Panama City or arrange a domestic shuttle through our team. We’re happy to organize transportation directly from the airport or your hotel so you can skip the stress and get straight to the beach. If you’re venturing to Bocas del Toro or other Caribbean surf spots, you can book a short domestic flight or take an overnight bus and boat combination. Renting a car is also an option if you plan to explore multiple regions, but for most travelers, pre-arranged shuttles make life easier.

No matter where your Panama surf trip takes you, getting around is part of the adventure — winding coastal roads, lush jungle landscapes, and the occasional roadside fruit stand make every journey memorable.

Where to Surf in Panama

surfing in Playa Venao

Panama’s geography sets it apart from many other surf destinations. With a Pacific coastline and a Caribbean side, you can find surfable waves any time of year — it’s just a matter of knowing where to go.

Playa Venao (Pacific Coast): A consistent beach break ideal for all skill levels, located on the Azuero Peninsula. Home to Beach Break Surf Camp.

Santa Catalina (Pacific Coast): Famous for its powerful right-hand point break, better suited for advanced surfers.

Cambutal (Pacific Coast): A quieter, off-the-grid destination offering reef and point breaks with a jungle backdrop.

Bocas del Toro (Caribbean Coast): Known for its reef breaks and crystal-clear water; best surf season is from December to March.

The Pacific coast thrives during the Rainy Season (May–October) with bigger south swells, while the Caribbean lights up during the Dry Season (December–March) thanks to winter storms from the north. Depending on when you visit, you can chase waves on either coast — but if you're looking for a one-stop surf destination that delivers year-round, Playa Venao should be your top pick.

Why Playa Venao is the Ultimate Destination

There’s a reason surfers keep coming back to Playa Venao — it’s simply one of the most reliable and versatile waves in Central America. This crescent-shaped beach offers a little something for everyone, no matter your level of experience.

For beginners, the mellow waves at either end of the bay are perfect for learning to catch your first wave. The sand bottom and forgiving wave shape make it a low-risk environment for progression. Intermediate surfers love the playful, punchy peaks in the middle of the beach, which offer perfect practice for turns and small barrels. And when a solid swell rolls in, advanced surfers can score waves at the main peak that hold serious size.Playa Venao picks up swell nearly 300 days a year, making it one of the most dependable surf spots in the region.

A stay at Beach Break Surf Camp is the ideal way to experience Playa Venao. Our beachfront location means you can roll out of bed and onto your board. We offer surf lessons, board rentals, and video analysis sessions, whether you’re a total beginner or looking to refine your style. After a surf session, you can relax in your roomside hammock, grab a smoothie at our on-site restaurant, or unwind in the pool watching the waves just beyond the shore.

The vibe in Playa Venao is just as good as the waves — a friendly, welcoming community where travelers, surfers, and locals come together to enjoy the simple pleasures of life by the sea.

Things to Do in Panama Beyond Surfing

Of course, even the most dedicated surfers need a break occasionally. Panama offers plenty to do when you’re not in the water.

• Explore Nature Beyond Venao: Take a trip to Cerro Hoya National Park to hike through lush rainforest and spot wildlife like monkeys, toucans, and sloths. Boat tours to Coiba Island offer some of the best diving and snorkeling in Central America.

• Cascada Trail Waterfall Hike: Just a short walk from Beach Break Surf Camp, the Cascada Trail offers a short hike through jungle leading to a beautiful waterfall. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) round trip and takes about 25 minutes each way. Along the way, you might spot howler monkeys and various bird species. At the end of the trail, cool off with a dip in the waterfall pool.

• Cultural Adventures: Spend a day in Panama City visiting the historic Casco Viejo district. Sample local cuisine, browse artisan markets, and experience the colorful fusion of old-world charm and modern energy.

• Relax and Recharge: Playa Venao has a growing scene of yoga studios, massage therapists, and wellness centers — perfect for restoring your body after long surf sessions.

• Local Dining: Fresh seafood, tropical fruit smoothies, authentic Panamanian dishes and international favorites are all part of the experience. Venao’s beachfront restaurants and casual cafes offer plenty of options for refueling between surfs.
