Meet the Retreat Hosts

Rich Overgaard (@rovergaard)

Rich Overgaard (@rovergaard) lives in Vancouver and first built his skills as a surfer on an LGBTQ-friendly surf safari in Costa Rica back in 2015. Now, he tries to get away once or twice per year to the warm waters of Mexico and Central America to chill on a beach and catch waves.

Steven Redant (@stevenredant)

Steven Redant (@stevenredant) is an international DJ (and founder of @longboardzaddy) from the gay circuit who lives in the Canary Islands, Spain. He gets to surf most days and started when his midlife crisis hit (it was surfing or a Porsche!) He says himself that surfing has saved his life, and is happy to share his joy with the rest of the world.

Rich and Steven connected through the @Surfergays Instagram account, a place for LGBTQ+ members to connect and show love for gay surfing!

Every week in Playa Venao, surfers arrive with different backgrounds and goals. Some are catching their first waves. Others have been surfing for years but feel like they’ve stalled out. No matter their skill level, there are usually a few consistent underlying issues that stand out. It’s rarely about bravery or athleticism. Surf Camp vs DIY Surf Trip: What You Actually Get for Your Money

A surf trip sounds simple. Book a flight. Find a place to stay. Rent a board. Paddle out. And yes, you can do Playa Venao that way. Plenty of people do. But there’s a difference between surfing on vacation and building real consistency while you’re there. That difference usually comes down to structure. Most DIY trips start with good intentions. You check the forecast. You rent something that looks about right. You paddle out where other people are sitting. You hope it lines up. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t.
