How to Safely Travel to Beach Break Surf Camp (Panama) in 2021

April 13, 2021

As spring rolls around and vaccines are distributed in much of the world, it finally feels like things are getting back to some kind of normal.

If you’re a surf fiend– or could easily tolerate a fulfilling beach vacation right now– you may be feeling ready to get back out there. And, responsible traveler that you are, you’re not looking for massive crowds or crazy Cancun vibes.

The problem is– you’re not entirely sure where to go right now. What’s open? What’s safe? What are the rules for getting there? What will the vibe be like?

We are going to walk you through all that. But first, let us introduce you to our spot:

Beach Break Surf Camp in Playa Venao, Panama

Welcome to Beach Break Surf Camp in Playa Venao, Panama. We’re an off-the-beaten path surf camp and fitness and wellness center located on one of the most consistent surf breaks in Latin America, with swells for all levels.

We’re all about health and wellness at Beach Break, and we take COVID-19 seriously. Besides complying with all of Panama’s health and safety policies, Beach Break has an important advantage of being entirely outdoors.

“You are less likely to be exposed to COVID-19 during outdoor activities, even without the use of masks, when you stay at least 6 feet apart from people who don’t live with you and limit your time around others.”

–Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Unless you’re in your room– with a private entrance and individual A/C units– when you’re at Beach Break, you’re out in the ocean breeze.

Beach Break COVID-19 Policies

In addition to our natural outdoor advantage, Beach Break enforces Panama government and CDC regulations. This includes:

  • Extra cleaning precautions for all common spaces throughout the day, in accordance with local health and safety regulations
  • All staff members are required to wear masks and have their temperature taken daily
  • Hand-washing stations have been conveniently placed throughout the hotel and common areas
  • Ample distancing of pool and lounge chairs
  • Guests have temperature checked upon arrival

It’s important to us that our staff and guests feel comfortable in a safe and clean environment. Learn more about our COVID-19 precautions.

Panama and COVID-19

Before we gush over Beach Break’s surf camp packages, let’s explore how Panama is handling COVID-19. We want to stress we are not here to down-play the existence or seriousness of the virus.

Panama is still dealing with the COVID-19 virus (who isn’t), with restrictions in place and enforced such as mask requirements and curfews in certain regions. Travel is permitted and to an extent encouraged, though the government is prudent with its policies and enforcement.

We believe, with the proper precautions in place, traveling to visit us here in Playa Venao, Panama is safe. Of course, you may be vaccinated or soon-to-be, in which case, even better!

Panama travel policies

Disclaimer: Travel policies and restrictions often change. We will do our best to keep this page updated, but please confirm information.

Currently, U.S. and Canadian tourists are allowed to enter, along with many European countries. As of March 31, Panama is restricting travelers from South America. Here are some of the current policies in place:

  • A negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or antigen) within 48 hours of travel is required for entry.
  • Health screening procedures are in place at airports and other ports of entry
  • U.S. citizens are not required to quarantine upon entry, unless they test positive in which case they will be required to quarantine at a designated hotel
  • Masks are required in all public areas. Individuals not wearing a mask are subject to possible detention and fine.

Back to Beach Break

Back to the fun stuff. These photos speak for themselves, but let’s talk a bit about what you’ll have to look forward to at Beach Break.

The Surf Camp

Beach Break Surf Camp is the ideal place to start or advance your surfing journey. The large expanse of Playa Venao offers many breaks for all levels, and the soft sandy bottom doesn’t hurt either. Our coaches are awesome– patient, kind, and crazy good at what they do.

Beach Break offers awesome and affordable packages for beginners, family surf vacations, and advanced surfers, plus custom group packages. (For all you North Americans– you can expect to pay much less than you would back home.)

Fitness and Wellness Center

At Beach Break, we are all about that active lifestyle. Just take a look at our brand-new, beautiful Fitness and Wellness Center– a multipurpose space offering classes in:

  • Yoga
  • Martial arts
  • Weight training
  • Kickboxing
  • Group fitness
  • Pilates
  • Kids’ classes

and more.

Whether you’re looking for a health and fitness reset, have always wanted to learn martial arts, or have a kid or two that could use some tiring out, the Beach Break Fitness and Wellness Center is a one-of-a-kind addition to our beachful beachfront.

About Playa Venao, Panama

Let’s talk about the Playa Venao area. Venao is a long and beautiful expanse of beach known for its world-class surfing and laid-back vibes.

A 5-hour drive from Panama City, the region is removed enough to avoid the crowds and “on the map” enough to have truly beautiful modern facilities and amenities– including great restaurants and recreation facilities.

While a few established hotels and hostels line the shore, you won’t find touristy vibes in Playa Venao. With a diverse community of friendly regulars and low-key travelers, Playa Venao feels like somewhere you could stay forever. (Did we mention there is a co-working space next door?)

Getting to Beach Break

So how do you travel to Beach Break Surf Camp in Panama in 2021? Safely, that is.

Panama’s main airport– Tocumen International Airport– is the most major and modernized airport in Central America. There are thousands of direct and connecting flights coming in each day. Make sure you’re abiding by the above regulations for COVID-19 travel, and you should not have trouble flying into Panama.

Private Transportation

Once you land, we are happy to provide private transportation according to your flight schedule, anytime day or night.  Our safe, professional drivers will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. As mentioned, staff have their temperature taken daily.

You’ll even have WIFI as you enjoy the drive to Venao in our comfortable, spacious shuttles.

Private transportation is included in many of our surf camp packages and can also be requested as an add-on service.

Rent a Car and Drive

You’re also welcome to rent a car from the airport and drive to Playa Venao yourself. This may not be the most cost-effective option, as there is nowhere to return the car once here– you’ll have to keep it throughout your stay.

This may be ideal for you if you want to explore the surrounding region, though there is more than enough to keep you busy and happy in Playa Venao.

Normally, there is regular bus service running between Panama City and Playa Venao. Due to the pandemic, this is not the most reliable option or safest option. For your own safety and peace of mind, we recommend one of the above options.
